You will serve as a AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the Public Works Department of Naval Facilities Engineering Command of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.
Duties
You will develop preventive maintenance schedules to keep air conditioning equipment running at peak performance.
You will read blueprints, sketches, and technical manuals to understand the functions of the air conditioning parts or systems, to plan and lay out work, or to aid in finding faulty parts or systems.
You will operate vacuum pumps, recovery units, gauges, and dial-a-charges to evacuate, charge, or transfer refrigerants in air conditioning equipment.
You will disassemble, replace, and adjust thermostats, pressure stats, humistats, relays, switches, and other automatic control devices to verify working condition of air conditioning systems.
You will conduct research and inspect heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to determine cost effective repair solutions.
You will Troubleshoot and repair defective parts and components of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems to verify operating condition.
Requirements

- You must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR certification.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
Qualifications
This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. Applicant must possess a Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification (includes completion of 608 cert exam) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. You must attach a copy of this certification to your application package to be considered for the position.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: 1) Interpreting instructions, specifications and blueprints to repair air conditioning and refrigeration systems; 2) Troubleshooting air conditioning and refrigeration system operations to detect component malfunctions; and 3) Installing and repairing a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
