Duties
Brief safety measures to various audiences.
Conduct on-site inspections of training areas ensuring that compliance and local safety policies, environmental programs and Federal Regulations are being enforced.
Monitor the use and access to live fire facilities, maneuver areas, ranges, and impact areas.
Issue down range clearance for assigned area after taking into consideration all critical safety factors.
Use a computer system to maintain, store, and input information to track land and range use, ammunition utilization and data.
Disseminate weather warnings and advisories through the Local Weather Network System to all units and personnel in the training complex.
Maintain five (5) nets Ultra High Frequency (UHF)/Very High Frequency (VHF), Observer Controller Communication System (OCCS) and Frequency Module (FM) radios base stations to monitor training areas.
Requirements
- This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights or entitlement based on active military service, recovery from a compensable injury, or return rights based on an overseas tour.
- You will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging that you are aware of the obligation and willing to be displaced under reduction in force procedures upon the return of the former incumbent.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license for operation of government vehicle in the performance of duties.
- Incumbent must pass the TRADOC Inter-Service Range Safety Course within one year of hiring date in order to be certified for job retainability.
- A pre-employment physical is required.
- TDY travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
- Shift work required: Irregular/Rotating/7-Day/Week/Holidays and Overtime.
- This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather or emergency situations the incumbent is required to report or remain at work to support mission operations. Must maintain a functioning telephone at residence.
Qualifications
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:
Position may be filled as a temporary promotion or detail NTE (2 years) by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Employees currently located in OCONUS (foreign or non-foreign) are not eligible for a detail to a CONUS position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized experience: Your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience involves eliminating safety hazards in work methods or environmental conditions; implementing safety training or promotion within the arena of live fire facilities, maneuver areas, ranges, and impact areas; AND performing routine inspection and investigative work in enforcing occupational safety and health laws. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower level/grade position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
