You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST of NAVENPVNTMEDU 2 NORFOLK. THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain Department of Defense civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in the Department of Defense.

Duties

You will review work process and facility plans to verify sufficient health controls are in place and operational. You will review reports, data collected, and survey results to identify potential problems. You will conduct industrial hygiene surveys of large, highly complex industrial work operations. You will compile investigative reports into written findings or recommendations.

Requirements

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience developing the competencies of others to perform and contribute to the organization by providing ongoing feedback and opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods. Experience empowering employees to address skill gaps and realize their highest potential. Experience within the broad field of occupational health and safety, recognizing environmental conditions or stresses arising in or from the workplace which may cause workers' injury, illness, impairment, or affect the wellbeing of workers. Experience developing and presenting recommendations to high-ranking officials/ management to support decision-making. Experience developing and analyzing policies and procedures to incorporate environmental health prevention practices and measures in all workplaces. Experience assessing the effectiveness of health and safety programs and practices designed to prevent injury to personnel and loss of property in the industrial work environment. Experience assessing the impact of military operations and testing on natural resource ecosystems to include surveying the condition of assigned areas and preparing technical reports of findings. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
