This work requires the ability to communicate information effectively through the use of signs and visual media, a high knowledge of and ability to apply principles of artistic design and display to the field of communications through the use of a wide variety of graphic and/or visual arts techniques, and the ability to produce the appropriate signs materials used primarily in signage, printed materials, exhibits, and presentations.
Duties
Incumbent is responsible for Original Concept Designs, coordinating, planning, recommending, preparing, developing, designing, formatting, fabricating, assembling, and/or installing effective uses of visual material to achieve public information objectives.
Determines material equipment requirements, orders necessary supplies, and reports on work in progress as required.
Uses machines to cut metal and applies letters to sheeting.
Determines media, method size, layout, and placement of emblems, artwork, lettering, etc., coordinating with other sign painter.
Prepares cost estimates and serves as liaison between installation and private sector to insure cost effectiveness.
Applies a variety of graphic arts techniques, including freehand and mechanical lettering, to produce signs, posters, and displays for inside and exterior use, including building and reflective traffic signs.
Performs all aspects of work involved in creation of various forms of professionally designed visual information fabrications such as illustrations, graphics, digital electronic images, charts, posters, brochures, directories, maps, mats, enlargements, reductions, instructional information, transparencies, overhead signs, room number signs, right angles, specialty signs, badges, plaques, banners, models, exhibits, displays, vehicle lettering, etc

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Moderate lifting/carrying (15lbs-44lbs), pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulders, use of hands/fingers and legs, periods of walking, standing, crawling, kneeing, bending, and climbing. Ability to rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, distinguish basic colors and shades, depth perception, far vision, hearing, and mental/emotional stability.
Physical Effort: Work requires standing, reaching, bending and continual movement of hand and arm. Occasionally may work in a kneeling position or be required to climb a ladder to do lettering. There is frequent lifting of weights up to 10 pounds and occasionally may lift items weighing up to 50 pounds. The sign painter paints, repairs, and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the painter to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Sign painters are able to perform work while wearing a respirator or other breathing apparatus.
