This vacancy is being filled via the Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) for an Economist position in the Center for Economic Studies located in any Federal Statistical Research Data Center within the U.S. Census Bureau. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Economist-0110-14, FPL GS-14 positions within the U.S. Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

Duties

Leads, develops, plans, and conducts research in multiple topic areas using administrative, business, demographic or household data. Conducts research to improve social and economic measurement. Serves as expert on development and use of various administrative, demographic, household, business, and other data sets and data linkages available at the Census Bureau. Prepares research papers for publication and present research results at conferences and seminars.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement: Degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Specialized Experience: For the GS-14, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: conducting independent, original economic research on topics such as poverty, inequality, mobility, employment, income, and/or wealth leading to publications in peer-reviewed academic journals; demonstrating ability to use appropriate econometric techniques in the analysis and interpretation of social and economic research questions without supervision; providing written analysis to communicate research findings to a broad variety of audiences, including academics, senior officials, and the public; regularly presenting research findings to professional organizations or academic audiences; leading others in conducting empirical research and creating new data products to better measure the social and economic characteristics of the U.S. population. Education: Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.
