Duties

If selected for this position as a GS-0690-11/12/13 Industrial Hygienist your duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Manage a comprehensive industrial hygiene program for NIH. Develop instructions and control procedures covering complex potential health hazards. Review plans for new or modified processes and facilities. Develop policy and program objectives on a wide variety of occupational health problems. Direct a training program in industrial hygiene. Conduct studies and/or surveys performing analysis of industrial hygiene and safety issues. Provide expert advice and consultation to management officials on industrial hygiene matters.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for an Industrial Hygienist, GS-0690 position you must meet the Basic Education Requirement: A. Completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate/higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR B. Completed a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR C. Have a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to the above basic requirements, to qualify for an Industrial Hygienist position at the GS-11 level you must have: A. Completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M., if related OR B. (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: (1) evaluating occupational health hazards found in operations where industrial processes are of a conventional nature and literature on the hazards is readily available; (2) performing analysis using standard methods to determine nature and degree of toxic material present in a variety of materials; (3) conducting surveys to identify and evaluate health hazards and potential health hazards; and (4) compiling toxicological data for technical reports. OR C. A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the above basic requirements, to qualify for an Industrial Hygienist position at the GS-12 level you must have: A. (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: (1) planning and conducting complete evaluations of work operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions, analyzing findings, and recommending corrective measures and controls; (2) providing consultation and basic technical advice to program staff on occupational health and safety programs and issues; (3) planning and conducting studies and surveys analyzing hygiene and safety issues involved in the industrial process; and (4) investigating health problems which arise among workers. In addition to the above basic requirements, to qualify for an Industrial Hygienist position at the GS-13 level you must have: A. (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: (1) planning and administering an industrial hygiene program for an organization including analyzing and interpreting regulations and policies to determine their applicability to an organization's programs; (2) developing and implementing methods to eliminate or control hazardous and environmental conditions in a work environment; (3) providing training and technical advice to program staff on occupational health and safety programs and issues; (4) evaluating proposed new work processes or materials to assure incorporation of adequate measures for prevention of occupational disease hazards; and (5) preparing technical reports based on toxicological data.
