Duties

The primary duties of this position are: Set up, operate, and perform preventive maintenance and minor overhaul on skid or truck mounted drill rigs that have the capability of diamond coring and other types of rotary and non-rotary type drilling. Use water, air, and mud drilling mediums; performs gravity and packer pressure tests, and makes penetration tests, and single and multiple piezometer and other installations. Size up each drill site for best and safest access and the proper type of rig needed for the set-up, type and depth of drilling required. Access is varied and may include skidding, high-lining, helicopter sets or driving a truck mounted rig as required by remoteness of site, type or terrain and environmental considerations. Arrange support equipment such as pumps, winches, compressors, water and mud tanks, drill rods, meters, bits, barrels and sample boxes in as efficient a layout as the site allows. Responsible for keeping accurate data of the drilling which includes drilling action, drill medium gains, losses, and coloration, core sample recovery, casing depths, drill string types and sizes and other pertinent data for recording on the daily drill report, water test form and sample box marking. Anticipate and provide equipment and supply needs for the rig and crew and arrange transportation and storage of an adequate inventory of all items needed to operate smoothly and efficiently. Ensure that each crew member and any other person in the vicinity of the rig and working area is cognizant of pertinent safety requirements. Direct crew in safe work procedures, work and driving habits. Employ and ensure proper handling and use of explosives and fuels required for drilling. Participate in all tool-box safety meetings on a regular basis and provide follow-up for the crew on the minutes of the meeting. Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily outdoors; therefore, the employee is exposed to temperature extremes from -20 to 110 degrees, and dirt, dust, mud, rain, snow and ice (field work 95% of time). There is a constant possibility of injury to self and other employees of the work crew if proper safety procedures are not followed. Incumbent will work a variety of schedules, including longer than normal workdays, and weekends and holidays as required (usually shifts are 10 days on/4 days off, 10 hour days). Physical Effort: Work is extremely physical and involves handling, lifting, bending, pulling, pushing; and lifting, carrying, and moving heavy drilling equipment. There are also prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, pushing, climbing, reaching and pulling.

Selective Placement Factor: This position requires a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) license, forklift certification, and a fall protection and rescue certification. Failure to provide proof of such license and certifications will cause you to be rated ineligible for this position. You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 09/10/2024.
