About the Position: Serves as a 2nd Assistant Engineer on a Class I diesel/electric powered pipeline dredge (18" discharge and over). The incumbent will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all engine room equipment.
Duties
Maintain continuous operating efficiency to prevent damage to machinery.
Check and control operation of heating, refrigerating, plumbing, and water supply for the dredge.
Observe gages such as pressure gages, vacuum gages, fuel oil gages, tachometers, pyrometers, etc., to determine the proper functioning of machinery.
Repair engine room machinery as outlined by Chief Engineer and/or technical specifications.
Repair fuel lines, grinding valves, cylinders, pistons, and shears in auxiliary pumps and machinery.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent will be required to operate a surface vessel, whether powered or not, including dredging equipment, when duties include operating, navigating, steering, directing, or sailing the vessel, or operating the spuds on a dredge.
- This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
- A pre-employment physical exam is required.
- This position requires work in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.).
- Shift work is required. Days of operation and typical daily schedules may vary.
- NOTE: This position is dual rated to the position of 1st Assistant Engineer, Pipeline Dredge, XH-4742-12, position description GI116101
- If qualified and possesses appropriate U.S. Coast Guard Chief and Assistant Engineer's license commensurate with the type of engine room machinery, equipment, horsepower, and characteristics of the vessel to which assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) 2nd Assistant Engineer Pipeline Dredge Class I without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform some tasks of Second Assistant Engineer Pipeline Dredge Class 1 tasks, which includes participating in the repairs of all engine room machinery and equipment including the main propelling engines, pumping engines, auxiliary pumps, machinery on the vessel and attendant plant and the electric/electronic systems, assisting in the control of the operation refrigeration and plumbing systems, and helping train subordinates on engine room procedures and methods. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment, or systems are in hard-to-reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside subjecting employee to vary climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, dangers involved in attending moving machinery, possible drowning from falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, and crankcase explosion.
