The Veterans Administration Portland Health Care System (VAPHCS) is a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Tertiary Care healthcare facility serving more than 85,000 unique Veterans and over 880,000 outpatient Veteran visits each year in Oregon and Southwest Washington. VAPHCS consists of the main tertiary care medical center overlooking the city of Portland, the Vancouver Campus in Vancouver, Wash., and ten outpatient clinics across Central and Northwest Oregon.

Duties

Major duties include but not limited to: Service and Maintain Equipment - Maintains and repairs on all types of malfunctioning sterilization equipment, washers and generators. Trace wiring, broken or worn parts, leaks, feedback and interference issues. Check voltage tolerances, amperage, power supplies, wave shape, frequency resonance, deflection time, decay curve, gain, balance, signal sensitivity and similar indicators against prescribed tolerances and specifications. Construct devices and systems utilizing existing instruments and parts. Electrical- Troubleshoot the major electrical distribution systems from high voltage 15KV to low voltage, 12V, AC and DC systems, and such systems that are composed of category 5,6 and 7 wiring (computer). Loading and testing of new and existing high voltage electrical conductors, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment. Install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, test, calibrate, adjust, overhaul, and repair a wide variety of medical, laboratory, and dental equipment. Electro-Mechanics- Skilled in electrical/mechanical theory and electronics such as fir alarm systems, low voltage security systems, emergency power generation systems, medical equipment, fiber optic communication and data systems. Ability to follow blueprints, manufacturing schematics, oral and written instructions. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/04/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to perform as a Medical Equipment Repairer without more than normal supervision. Duties may include but not limited to: Installing, modifying, troubleshooting, maintaining, testing, calibrating, adjusting, overhauling, and repairing a wide variety of medical, laboratory, and dental equipment; Reading blueprints, manufacturing schematics and have working knowledge of the NEC, NFPA and OSHA requirements; Constructing, installing operating a variety of sophisticated electrical systems, circuits, equipment and controls; Have practical knowledge of sizes and types of wire, fiber-optic, category 5 and high speed data cabling, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Stand, stoop, bend, and frequently work in cramped and awkward positions for prolonged periods. Continually lift from 5 to 18 kilograms (10 to 40 pounds) and, occasionally, objects weighing in excess of 18 kilograms (40 pounds) up to 65 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is done inside and outside, in hot and cold temperature extremes. Constantly exposed to electric shocks, contagious diseases, moving equipment and machinery. Exposed to the possibility of broken bones, cuts, and bruises. May be exposed to extremely high noise levels, exposure to radiation, chemicals, and carcinogens. Required to take precautions and wear required safety equipment and clothing.
