This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce t to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Supervised by the Cook-Steward, who makes work assignments and outlines the overall requirements of the job. Work is spot-checked relative to job performance and production. Work assignments may require the incumbent to work a split shift, weekends and Holidays.
Duties
You will prepare and serve meals aboard a Hopper Dredge to all Crew Members.
You will prepare various meats such as poultry, fish, chops, steaks, roasts.
You will prepare various vegetables and fruits in a variety of ways such as cutting, grinding, dicing, and slicing.
You will prepare foods in a variety of ways such as soups, stews, gravies and sauces.
You will bake bread, cakes and pastries.
You will portion food for individual servings.
You will maintain all areas in a clean and orderly condition.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs.
- You MUST possess a current United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), Steward's Department (SD), Food Handler (FH) endorsement or higher AND a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- Completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This is a mandatory drug Testing Designated Position (TDP), in accordance with EP 600-1-300, USACE Drug Testing Procedures for the Army's Drug-Free Federal Workplace (DFW) Program, dated 28 Feb 01.
- Participation in the Mandatory Drug Testing Program is required in accordance with EP 600-85.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Cook (Dual Rate), without more than normal supervision. Qualified applicants for this position must have the ability or potential ability to prepare and serve meals for groups of people by preparing various meats, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits and baked goods. You must have knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used when cooking for groups of people. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Efforts: Work requires moderate physical effort. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies normally up to 45 lbs and occasionally over 45 lbs. work requires prolonged standing, walking and climbing, all of which can cause exertion of the lower back. The employee must maintain good lower back physical condition. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to see by low visibility conditions in order to perform duties.
Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in the galley where there is constant exposure to above average temperatures. Exposed to extremes of weather conditions, heat, and noise. There is danger of slippery decks and drowning. Must wear appropriate safety gear and protective clothing as required, and comply with sound safety practices. may be exposed to hot pipes, escaping steam and the effects of acids, solvents, and paint.
