This position is located in Alaska Regional Office, in the Geographical Information System (GIS) Division. This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

As a Geographer/Biologist/Physical Scientist/Cartographer you will be working for the Anchorage Regional Office on the GIS Team in the Resources Division. Anchorage is the perfect Alaska getaway. For more information visit Visit Anchorage, Alaska | Things To Do, Hotels & Adventure Major duties will include: Designs, develops, and manages Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to ensure their effective implementation. Utilizes geographic and cartographic principles to maintain data, conduct analysis, and produce high-quality digital and hardcopy GIS products. Designs, develops, and manages spatial database systems to ensure their effective implementation. Establishes and applies workflows for data creation and management, documents data and processes, and implements data distribution procedures using appropriate technologies. Designs, develops, and manages spatial data standards to ensure their effective implementation. Utilizes established practices to maintain data quality and implements security controls in line with industry standards. Provides technical support in GIS and data management to users with diverse skill levels and knowledge, addressing a wide range of GIS data applications and uses.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/09/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT: To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the basic requirements for the Geography Series 0150 (opm.gov), General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series 0401 (opm.gov), General Physical Science Series, 1301 (opm.gov), or Cartography Series 1370 (opm.gov) as follows: Geography, 0150 series: Education: Successfully completed a bachelor's degree or higher in an accredited college or university in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience:Education equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week. -OR- General Natural Resources Management and Biological, 0401 series Education: Successfully completed a bachelor's degree or higher in an accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You must provide a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: Educationthat included courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience, or additional education. You must provide a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week. -OR- General Physical Science, 1301 series: Education: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. You must provide a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: Education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education. You must provide a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week. -OR- Cartography, 1370 series: Education:bachelor's degree or higher in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). You must provide a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: Educationwith courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must provide a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week. -AND- In addition to the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes activities such as: Possesses experience with data management of geospatial data in a server or online, in a multi-user environment to include data design; Monitors and evaluates spatial data; Develops and implements spatial data standards; Documents data and workflow of spatial data; Provides customer support by conveying complex concepts with people having a wide range of understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: At least 3 full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree related to the occupation or other closely related subjects pertinent to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE as described above: To combine education and experience, first take your graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts and hours worked per week.
