The primary purpose of this position, LIQUID FUEL ROCKET ENGINE MECHANIC, WG-8601-10 potential 11, is to facilitate and ensure the mission and objectives of the organization are accomplished in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
Duties
Operate programmed test equipment to accomplish pre-disassembly diagnostic test of missile rocket engines and subsystem components, which require verification of operational characteristics to determine if they are within acceptable tolerances, or to isolate malfunctions to a subsystem or component.
Disassemble to gain access to malfunction or damaged subsystems or components.
Assemble subsystems and components into a physical and functional integrated system assuring that all work is of the highest degree and that strict configuration control is maintained.
Utilize special test equipment, such as Veeco mass spectrometer, cable master, and oscilloscope.
Update maintenance information systems as required.
Perform the duties of the Missile Mishap Response Team

- Task certified on duties within this position description by attending and successfully completing OJT, classroom training, and demonstrating proficiency in performing those tasks. May be required to certify work performed by others.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required.
- May be required to perform shift work.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
TARGETED POSITION: This position is a developmental WG-10 Target WG-11 position. This position may be filled at any grade level. Individual selected may be promoted without further competition, upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. Starting salary indicated on this vacancy announcement is for the (WG-10). Attainment of knowledge, skills, and abilities is required before promotion to the next higher grade and is dependent on demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the next higher grade level, meeting all regulatory requirements, and recommendation for promotion by the supervisor. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. Military Spouse candidates exercising their preference will be placed at the full performance level, if considered to be best qualified and selected.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8600 Engine Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Handles hypergolic fuel tanks associated with liquid rocket engines. Lifts and carries items weighing 25 pounds and over with assistance. Able to be respirator certified and wear a level "A" suit for extended periods of time in adverse weather to participate in MMRT events.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works within a clean room atmosphere. Works in areas of hazardous explosives, toxic vapors, high noise levels, dangers of electrical shock. May be required to wear self-support equipment (Acid Master Suit and self-contained breathing apparatus) and work in inclement weather. Absolute adherence to safety practices is mandatory. Specific safety Training is a prerequisite to working with propellant fuels. Propellant fuels consisting of Monomethyl Hydrazine (MMH) and Nitrogen Tetroxide are toxic when inhaled and when it comes in contact with the skin; will react with certain materials to create a flammable/explosive hazard. When exposed to concentrations above 440 PPM will cause asphyxiation and death. During MMRT events, Level A and SCBA will be worn as required in temperatures ranging from 30F to l00F degrees (ambient).
