The primary purpose of this position is to perform metal welding work involved in the manufacture, repair, modification, and assembly of various types of metal and alloy parts, equipment, systems, and structures. Additionally, fabricates, modifies, repairs, assembles, and installs sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies.

Duties

Use a variety of welding processes such as oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, metal spray arc, and spot and stud welding to join all types of common metals and alloys. Welds require complete penetration and fusion of base and filler metals even when welding in hard-to-reach places. Plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders. Sets up clamping fixtures. Develop patterns, lays out, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes. Operate complex hand and power machines such as sliproll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with extra forming rolls, and crimpers, and beading machines.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3700 - Metal Processing Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to the work of the position without more than normal supervision JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Ability to the work of the position without more than normal supervision Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Metals Dexterity and Safety PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT Employee must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, stretch, and work in awkward and cramped positions when welding in hard-to-reach or confined spaces. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 24 pounds without assistance and over 25 pounds with assistance. Sheet metal work requires continuous exertion when bending and shaping more complex items and in constructing larger and bulkier systems. Requires climbing above 12 feet. WORKING CONDITIONS Employee works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather and in areas that are noisy, dirty, greasy, and smoky. Is exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, ultraviolet radiation, and heated materials. There is the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, broken bones, burns, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There may be discomfort when wearing protective clothing, safety shoes, gloves, flash shield or eye goggles, and other equipment as required.
