About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Serve as an Instructor in the Department of Physical Education (DPE), primarily teaching Boxing, Fundamentals of Personal Fitness, and Lifetime Physical Activities. Instruct diverse facets of the physical education program, potentially encompassing areas such as combative, military movement (gymnastics), and survival swimming. Teach and demonstrate a wide range of skills and sports based on current trends, resources, instructor expertise, and cadet needs. Examples include, but are not limited to: Golf, Basketball, Skiing/Snowboarding, Scuba, Soccer, Tennis, etc. Serve as a sport educator in the USMA intramural program. Administer a variety of physical fitness tests to cadets. Communicate how to optimize performance through tailored physical training, effective nutritional fueling, recovery through sound sleep habits, and the development of performance-based psychological skills. Teach how to assess, develop, and maintain individual health and fitness as defined by the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) system. Instruct Boxing course which incorporates all aspects of amateur boxing, inclusive of offensive and defensive skills. Examples include, but not limited to: Fearful situation, on-guard stance (OGS), basic punches, tactics etc. Provide physical readiness training instruction during Cadet Summer Training. Serve on United States Military Academy (USMA), United States Corps of Cadets (USCC), and Department of Physical Education (DPE) committees.

Requirements

• Position may include working selected weekends, evenings and holidays.
• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Appointment to this position may be subject to a one year trial period.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic Accomplishment (Master's or Ph.D. preferred) In Physical Education or related field. 2) Demonstrated ability to perform, teach and/or coach a variety of basic, intermediate, and advanced boxing skill techniques. 3) The ability to instruct Health, Fitness, and/or Kinesiology courses at the collegiate level. 4) Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of Sports and/or Activity courses at the collegiate level.
