THIS IS AN OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT. APPLICATIONS WILL EXPIRE EVERY 90 DAYS. IN ORDER TO REMAIN IN CONSIDERATION, APPLICANTS MUST RESUBMIT THEIR APPLICATIONS. This position is located on a Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. The incumbent of this position serves as a recreation assistant responsible for organizing and administering a conventional basic recreational and physical fitness program or segments of an entire program.

Duties

Duties are listed at the full performance level. Provides on-site supervision of recreational activities to students with various skill levels and backgrounds. Ensures a safe, healthy atmosphere for all students performing recreational and physical fitness activities. Ensures that self-directed activities are carried out in accordance with the recreational plans. Identifies and makes changes in processes and/or procedures in order to have full participation by students. Schedules, coordinates, and supervises recurring group activities including making reservations, acquiring transportation, and other related arrangements and providing information concerning these activities based on overall recreation program plans. Identifies and recommends changes or modification to the recreation and physical fitness program. Performs special assignments in facility-wide programs or volunteer sponsored activities. Meets individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in recreational and physical fitness activities. Gives practical advice and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values. Serves as a lifeguard and water safety instructor.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license.
  • Must obtain and maintain all applicable Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications at the full performance level.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Provide course descriptions as necessary. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-4 level: Applicants must have six months of general experience AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 grade level; OR successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.); OR combinations of work experience and education which added together would equal 100 percent of the needed qualifications for the position. Transcripts must be included. General Experience is any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience examples include at least one of the following: working as a group leader or counselor in recreation programs for adults or children; teacher's aide for elementary recreation or physical education; aid or assistant in administration of recreation activities, etc. For the GS-5 level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: performing administrative duties in support of a recreational program, such as making reservations, acquiring transportation, and other related arrangements; providing information concerning physical education and recreational activities; assisting with offsite recreational activities; ensuring compliance with safety rules and regulations pertaining to physical/recreational activities; ensuring recreational equipment is operated in a safe manner; demonstrating recreational equipment and tools. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
