Join our team as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist where you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our workforce. This position is pivotal in developing and implementing safety programs, policies, and procedures to minimize risks and promote a safe working environment.
Duties
Administer and evaluate portions of a comprehensive health and safety program or related activities to ensure compliance and correct risk potentials for normal to high risk conditions.
Investigate and analyze mishaps and hazardous conditions. Develops measures to control or eliminate unsafe and hazardous conditions. Prepares written evaluations and reports of findings and recommendations.
Prepare supplemental guidance to regulations and manuals proposed by higher authority.
Provide guidance and recommendations on safety methods, standards, and procedures to eliminate or control a broad range of unsafe acts or conditions in a variety of work environments.
Train and instruct others on a variety of specialized safety and health subjects.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, GS-0018 position, at the GS-09 level you must have:
A. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing survey work to identify and evaluate hazardous and nonhazardous work operations and conditions (e.g., chemical storage areas); preparing drafts of reports proposing corrective measures for unsafe conditions and work practices; providing informal instruction to employees covering standard safety and occupational health subjects; and analyzing accident and injury reports to discover trends and mishap causes and to develop recommendations for eliminating or controlling the hazards detected; OR
B. 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree, or LL.B , or J.D, in a safety or occupational health field (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; OR
C. a combination of graduate education as described above and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position
In order to qualify for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, GS-0018 position, at the GS-11 level you must have:
A. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing t inspections of conventional work operations and activities where equipment, working conditions, and materials are potentially hazardous and recording apparent violations; recommending possible courses of action to control or eliminate hazards detected; providing instruction to employees covering standard safety and occupational health subjects; OR
B. 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D., or Ph.D., or LL.M., in a safety or occupational health field (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; OR
C. A combination of graduate education as described above and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
