About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Cut, trim, color and/or shape hair into various haircuts and/or hairstyles. Use tools to perform barber services. Clean and sanitize tools. Maintain working area.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued Barber's license. ***You MUST submit a copy of your license with your application package, or you will be rated ineligible.***
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
• This position requires lifting of at least 5 lbs.
• This is a Temporary position: NTE: 2 years.

Dexterity is required to lock the barbering swivel chair, adjust the chair height to the appropriate cutting level, and regulate the swivel movements of the chair throughout the barbering processes. Objects handled such as barbering instruments, tools and appliances seldom weigh more than five (5) pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed inside the Barbershop, which is properly heated, lighted, and ventilated. Duties expose incumbent to the possibility of electric shock. Exposed to hair clippings, and communicable diseases of the patrons. Required to wear a smock, wash hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and water, sanitize barbering tools, and maintain working area in accordance with established procedure.
