You will serve as a CRANE OPERATOR LEADER in the Crane Operations Branch (Code 742), Rigging and Equipment Operations Division (Code 740), Deputy Lifting and Handling Department (Code 701), Lifting and Handling Department (Code 700) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will coordinate work while assuring proper inter-trade and inter-shop coordination, high levels of quality assurance with timely yet orderly job completion. You will provide on the job training for workers, correct improper weight handling and equipment work methods, ensure assigned work procedures, process instructions and work related instructions and processes are being met. You will ensure safe work practices and good housekeeping while assuring timely tool, equipment, material, and procedure availability. You will operate weight handling equipment.

Requirements

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires that the selectee have visual acuity and accurate color discrimination.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to work in small and/or confined spaces.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to climb to heights greater than 150 feet.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE Certified in the operation of weight handling & material handling equipment; Demonstrating proper work methods; Providing on the job training for workers; Ability to correct improper weight handling and equipment (WHE) work methods; Ensure assigned work instructions, processes, and procedures are being followed; Ability to recognize defective equipment, procedures, and or workmanship; Applies thorough knowledge of WHE nomenclature, operating principles, capabilities, limitations, attachments, capacities, safe operating heights, radii, speeds of motion, stability and fineness of control.
