About the Position: The Chemical Biological Center (CBC) is the nation's principal research and development resource for non-medical chemical and biological defense. As a critical national asset, CBC supports all phases of the acquisition life-cycle from basic and applied research through technology development, engineering design, equipment evaluation, product support sustainment, field operations and demilitarization. Duties

Provides advice and services to personnel in toxic and hazardous substance utilization; personnel protection; evaluation of health hazards and exposures; evaluation of protective materiel; and interpretation of health standards. Represent CBC Safety and Health Office in consultations on issues. Provide industrial hygiene program direction in preparation of policy preparation, objectives, and procedural guidance. Recommends action to eliminate/control health hazards of unique highly toxic chemicals, biohazards and toxins. Provide guidance on, and ensures appropriate consideration is given to occupational health matters in plans for the development of new facilities and equipment (new, or off-the-shelf). Evaluate occupational and environmental health matters and advise the CBC Safety and Health Manager concerning areas of vulnerability. Provide services to managers and technical personnel at higher headquarters, other government activities and contractors in dealing with complex occupational health problems in the chemical warfare agent and biological defense arenas.

  • You must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 20% of the time.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and special experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technicology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Experience in two or more of the following: air sampling and instrumentation; analytical chemistry; basic science; biohazards; biostatistics and epidemiology; community exposure; engineering controls to include ventilation; ergonomics; health risk analysis and hazard communication; Industrial Hygiene program management; noise; non-engineering controls; thermal stressors; toxicology; work environments and industrial processes; 2) navigating complex occupational health issues in the chemical warfare agent and biological defense arenas and 3) providing direction for an industrial Health program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
