Duties

Major Duties of Position GS-0401-0150-0408-12 Geospatial Natural Resources Specialist/Geographer/Ecologist (Interdisciplinary) Serve as a consultant and advisor regarding geospatial and ecological modeling and analysis that supports a range of natural resources planning and science activities with an emphasis on the Greater Sage Grouse Initiative. Coordinate activities with other agencies, interest groups, and natural resources personnel with the goal of integrating landscape data into the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) business practices. Initiate, formulate, plan, and execute a variety of geospatial assessments and projects that analyze and model natural and human-induced processes and biological and physical components of ecosystems. Use quantitative geospatial analysis techniques to predict effects of planned or natural changes in ecological systems. Conduct quantitative and qualitative evaluations of geospatial data products and applications for appropriate use for land management activities at the state and/or regional level. Provide research results, knowledge, and new technologies to resource staff and field users by means such as technical publications, presentations, training sessions, web, and social media. Support the integration of broad, regional, and/or landscape scale assessments and data into BLM land management decision making and the integration of remote sensing into natural resource management and monitoring programs. Represent the interests of the BLM in various state and/or regional forums on technical and scientific issues associated with the implementation of geospatial applications and strategies. Ensure that geospatial program activities are consistent with national policies and priorities, as well as any applicable laws or regulations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application. BASIC REQUIREMENT: In order to meet the Basic Requirement GS-0150/0401/0408-12, Geospatial Natural Resources Specialist/Geographer/Ecologist, you must meet the Basic Requirement of ONE of the following: GEOGRAPHY SERIES, 0150 Bachelor's Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GENERAL NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES SERIES, 0401 Bachelor's Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. ECOLOGY SERIES, 0408 Bachelor's Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: Adapt or modify ecological techniques and procedures affecting geospatial modeling, analysis, applications, and technology. Conduct oral briefings to individuals or groups on topics related to agency mission. Perform technical work related to spatial and non-spatial databases and data received from remote sensors. Apply concepts and theories regarding the influence of patterns on the organization and interaction between integrated ecosystems. TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
