This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Clay Center, NE In this position you will be involved in almost all phases of the scientist's study, and has responsibility for selected phases or conducts test applications of scientific and technical theories when the methods, techniques, and procedures are clearly outlined. This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.

Duties

Sets up, adjusts, and operates laboratory equipment, records instrumental readings, and evaluates test data. Determines the cause of deviations in the test data. Visually examines the test items to determine apparent damage or change. Constructs, assembles, installs, modifies and repairs experimental or other equipment used in the conduct of research assignments.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. GS-5 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience adjusting, installing, or repairing engineering equipment; using computer software to assemble data; and preparing or summarizing results. OR Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. At least 6 of the 24 semester hours must have been in drafting if the position has been designated by a drafting area of specialization. OR A combination of education and experience as described above. GS-6 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience adjusting, installing, modifying, calibrating, or repairing engineering equipment or working with chemical processes; collecting and analyzing air quality data from field or laboratory instruments; utilizing computer software, laboratory, or field equipment to collect and evaluate air quality and environmental data; and summarizing data to be used in reports. OR Educaton: One full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Related degrees may include agricultural engineering, biological engineering, engineering technologies, environmental engineering, environmental science, natural sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, animal science, meteorology, engineering design, chemistry, statistics, or computer science. OR A combination of graduate education and experience as described above. GS-7 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical or mechanical instrumentation in support of air quality or environmental research; collecting, tabulating, and analyzing multi-phase projects from field and laboratory instruments; utilizing computer software; calibrating laboratory and field equipment to collect and evaluate air quality and environmental data; and illustrating and summarizing data to be used in reports. OR Education: One full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Related degrees may include agricultural engineering, biological engineering, engineering technologies, environmental engineering, environmental science, natural sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, animal science, meteorology, engineering design, chemistry, statistics, or computer science. OR A combination of graduate education and experience as described above Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
