You will serve as a Machinist in the Commanding Officer, MRO Production of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will recommend and use methods and procedures that contribute toward more efficient and economic machining operations, greater dimensional accuracy, or process improvement. You will make decisions relative to the use of new machine tools for particular types of jobs and keeping abreast of technological changes in the machining occupation. You will provide technical assistance to lower grade workers. You will improve goals and programs through Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) processes. You will operate, set up, program, and edit machines with up to 5 numerically controlled machine axis movements. You will determine independently the equipment and process procedures required to obtain the most efficient and economical work operations.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Working on military aircraft, CH53, F18 A-D, and MV22 with machinist tooling, including lathes, mills, and specialized measuring equipment or tooling, and performing various machining operations; 2) Demonstrating the ability to read and execute written instructions from maintenance manuals, engineering instructions, and blueprints, while following safety guidelines and ensuring that all machining operations meet the required quality standards; 3) Performing accurate and precise machining operations, while being flexible and adaptable to changing work environments and priorities; 4) Demonstrating communication skills, being able to work well in a team environment, and strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot any issues that arise during the machining process. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
