About the Position: Medical Technician position located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford Maryland. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Draw blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures. Perform a wide variety of tests for the Clinic laboratory utilizing complex automated systems. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Maintain accurate records utilizing Levy-Jennings charts and ensures all QC results fall within established control limits prior to releasing patient results. Perform a wide variety of hematology and microbiological testing involving the interpretation of cells and organisms utilizing microscopic techniques. Assist in training hospital laboratory personnel, staff and students in the performance of hematology, chemistry, and urinalysis tasks and the related quality assurance, instrument maintenance and implications of various results.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • A Childcare Background Check (CNACI) is required. This position has a specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require contact with children.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a clinical laboratory performing the full range of procedures such as specimen processing, hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, immunoassays and limited microbiological testing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as medical technology, chemistry, or biology. NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. Certification Preferred: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is preferred.
