This position is located at the Fort Yuma Service Unit, Winterhaven, California. The primary purpose of the position is to perform protective services with guarding federally owned or leased buildings and properties, protecting government equipment , materials and controlling access to the facilities. The incumbent reports to Supervisory Security Guard.
Duties
Major Duties:
Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies. Incumbent provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices.
Patrols all area of the service unit to check locks, alarms, fences, gates or other barriers.
Patrols installation perimeters to detect faulty fences and detection equipment, trespassing violations and attempted thefts.
Patrols buildings to prevent theft or damage to federal property, equipment, tools and supplies.
Controls personnel access by monitoring the identification of individuals entering controlled areas.
Monitors alarm systems, closed circuit television systems and telephone and radio networks. Protects the scene of an incident and relinquishes control to the police or other law enforcement officials as appropriate.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-0085-06:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life; locking doors and gates of entrances and exits to secure federal buildings; answering alarms and investigating disturbances; monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure of employees, visitors, patients and other persons; patrolling premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion; circulating among visitors, patients, or employees to preserve order; responding to medical emergencies, bomb threats, fire alarms, or intrusion alarms, following emergency response procedures; training subordinate security officers in rules and procedures; communicating security status, updates, and actual or potential problems.
Lead duties include: Distributing and balancing workload among employees, instructing employees in specific tasks and job techniques, provide training to new employees, spot checks work.
Investigation of Fitness: A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Such investigations will be conducted under the security requirements of the hiring agency.
Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
