Duties

This position serves as a Park Ranger (River Patrol) for the Green River District. Works with the public to provide information, conducts permit compliance and safety inspections and conducts river patrols. Responds to emergency situations, including swift water rescue, and administering first aid. Gathers and analyzes data related to recreation resources to recognize prominent trends. Presents a positive image of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and conducts visitor contact in a courteous, professional and friendly manner. Performs more complex facility maintenance and/or repairs. Installs and maintains various types of signage on public lands, such as off-road vehicle, wilderness portal, boundary, directional road and trail, and interpretive signing. Conducts wilderness monitoring and backcountry patrols. Completes several multiday river trips in class III to class IV rapids. Works independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: 1) An applicant appointed to this position must possess whitewater rescue techniques to include swift water swimming, recognition of swift water hazards and knowledge of shallow and deep-water crossings and rescue problems. 2) Include this information on your resume along with the River(s) you safely navigated in 15-16 foot raft AND the number of years. I understand failure on my part to provide this information in my resume will deem me ineligible for further consideration for this position. An applicant appointed to this position must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger (River Patrol). Qualifying specialized experience includes: explaining regulations to visitors; providing information and advice on activities or resources; monitoring special recreation or boating permits; rowing a 15-16 foot raft class II-IV whitewater rapids; and assisting with launching a raft on multi-day river trip. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Undergraduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Park Ranger (River Patrol). Qualifying specialized experience includes: conducting independent patrols in both front and back country areas to access public land areas; conducting independent multi-day river patrols; working in a recreation or visitor contact setting; rowing a 15-16 foot raft class II-IV whitewater rapids; and implementing or applying policy related to protection, conservation or management of recreation areas or similar operations. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
