About the Position: This Public Safety Dispatcher (OA) position has multiple vacancies located in Fort Myer, VA and Fort McNair, DC.
Duties
Perform emergency service duties with critical timelines.
Evaluate 911 emergency calls.
Dispatch appropriate emergency services (police, fire or medical) personnel.
Determine cause of alarm and initiate appropriate response.
Operate all dispatch and alarm systems to dispatch appropriate personnel.
Conduct testing/maintenance of various systems.
Provide emergency responders with situational information.
Transmit emergency request to appropriate emergency personnel.
Provide instructions to caller regarding specific procedures to take in emergency situations.
Maintain daily events, emergencies, processes, or notifications received according to protocols.
Prepare and maintain reports using a variety of word processing software programs.
Utilize an electronic incident reporting system.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment DoD Telecommunicator I and II certification (or equivalent).
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment DoD Hazmat Awareness and Operations certification.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Basic Life Support CPR.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Advance Fire Services Dispatching, Advance Police Services dispatching, and Non-emergency Call Handling.
- Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Police Dispatch.
- Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Fire Dispatch.
- Obtain and maintain within 12 months of employment certification in Emergency Medical Dispatch.
- Continue dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training. The employee must maintain an overall compliance score in the performance of duties of 90 percent, or better, as reviewed by the Advanced Quality Assurance (AQUA) software.
- Work requires up to 12-hour rotating shifts which includes days, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Employee is required to work (weather essential) regardless of weather conditions, Terrorist Force Protection Condition (TFPCON) or installation closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
- This position requires a Secret Clearance.
- Subject to call back, on-call, and mandatory overtime as the mission requires.
- This position may require the employee to wear a uniform.
- This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.
- Travel Duty may be required up to 10% of the time.
- Obtain and maintain within 6 months of employment certification in Domestic Violence Intervention, Suicide Intervention, 9-1-1 Liability, Hazmat Preparedness for Dispatchers, and Advance Public Safety Dispatching.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Answer emergency 911 calls; dispatch appropriate equipment in emergency situations; perform intervention with distraught emergency callers; and/or maintain reports and retrieve information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-06.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
