The Medical Instrument Technician (Supervisory Anesthesia Technician) is located in Anesthesia Service at VA Northern California Health Care System. The incumbent assumes full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians, which include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; providing anesthesia technician services in more complex cases; and making recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures.
Duties
Major Duties include but are not limited to:
Plan and direct programs at affiliated medical centers and their satellite outpatient clinics and have full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of non-supervisory personnel and at least one subordinate team leader or supervisor.
The incumbent requires knowledge of the more complex procedures and techniques in the practice of anesthesiology such as extracorporeal blood salvage, washing and return to patient (also known as autotransfusion or cell saving) and arterial and/or venous cannulation for the establishment of arterial pressure monitoring or intravenous fluid/medication delivery.
Plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and procedure program. Evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. Manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs and administer the allocated budget.
Provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. duties.
Resolve problems which may interfere with patient examination or treatment; evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations; participate as an instructor in the facility's clinical training program; make final decisions on selections based on recommendations from subordinate supervisors or leads; take disciplinary action when necessary; and identify educational or training needs.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:

2. English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations:
Medical Instrument Technician (Supervisory Anesthesiology Technician), GS-10
Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

Preferred Experience: Extensive experience with anesthesia equipment, including set up, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Familiarity with a variety of anesthesia machines, monitors, and ancillary equipment used in surgical settings. Understanding of sterilization techniques and infection control practices. Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with surgical teams, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals. Ability to provide clear instructions and training to staff.
Demonstrated ability to address and resolve technical and operational issues quickly and effectively. Ability to make informed decisions in high pressure environments. Familiarity with healthcare regulations and standards related to anesthesia equipment and patient safety. Understanding of hospital policies and procedures regarding surgical and anesthesia support.
Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a healthcare setting. Ability to manage a team, including scheduling, training, and evaluating staff performance. Experience working in different clinical environments, such as hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, or specialized surgical units. Willingness to stay updated with the latest advancements in anesthesia technology and practices. Ability to adapt to changes in technology and healthcare protocols.
