About the Position: This position is for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, at the Illinois Waterway Project Office located in Peoria, Illinois. This position may be filled at the GS-0018-07, GS-0018-09, or GS-0018-11. Noncompetitive promotional potential to the GS-11 if filled at the GS-07 or GS-09 level.

Duties

Manage the equipment operator training program to ensure equipment operators are qualified and certified per regulations. Develop site specific specialized equipment safety plans based on Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA), and/or Accident Prevention Plans (APP). Integrate equipment safety into the Project Management Business Process, which covers all phases of work from project inception through completion. Ensure motorized and mechanized equipment are properly inspected, maintained and tracked to identify deficiencies, repaired, or taken out of service. Develop, review and analyze statistical data of accidents and injuries to determine trends.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Must have or be able to obtain a valid state motor vehicle driver's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site specific, job related requirements, and must maintain this license.
• A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
• Subsequent physical exams are required every two (2) years.
• Required to observe established safe working procedures; and, wear mandatory appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.

OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
