About the Position: This position is located within the US Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District, Willow Island Locks and Dams where you will perform journeymen level maintenance on mechanically operated navigation and flood control projects such as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and/or structural features of lock gates, dam gauges, valves, and lock operating mechanisms and systems.

Duties

Repair electrical/electronic/mechanical/hydraulic/pneumatic equipment through the utilization of a wide variety of diagnostic tools, measuring devices, and other systems as needed. Work with light, heavy gauge and hardened metals to perform welding of various types of items, using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions. Perform maintenance tasks and operational inspections to insure that all associated equipment is properly serviced. Identify when major repairs are needed in order to coordinate efforts for temporary repairs, technical engineering reviews, procurement of replacement items, and maintenance of navigation and flood control capability. May be required to operate a variety of site equipment to include cranes, water craft, tractors, dump trucks, etc. Inspect, troubleshoot, and/or disassemble mechanical operating equipment and the associated equipment at navigation structures (such as large mobile cranes, bulkhead hoists, generators, pumps, compressors, speed reducers, and hydraulic pumps). Participate in safety program training efforts and assures that daily work, personally performed and directed, includes full adherence to safety working practices and conditions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination is required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses associated with this position, such as Dump Truck, Truck and Trailer, Crane, Forklift, and Construction Equipment.
  • Must possess American Welding Society (AWS) Code D1.1. (Horizontal/Vertical/Overhead Positions) welders certification.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts and carries larger assemblies or complete units exceeding 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body in installing, repairing, operating, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, machinery recesses, lock walls, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders, scaffolding, and works from suspended stages. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work inside and outside during the day or night, subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water which is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment on scaffolds and from slings. Often the work will be behind bulkheads below the water level. Subject to falls, drowning, injury or discomfort and when inside, exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noises. Must use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.
