Duties
Provide complex cardiac Echocardiographic studies (two-, three-, and four-dimensional sector scanning, color, specular Doppler and myocardial mechanics) in adult patients referred to cardiology or through other department consults.
Performs pharmacologic and exercise stress testing, tracks and logs all of the above studies.
Oversees the organization, filing, and retrieval of cardiology patient medical information from clinic, laboratory, and professional correspondence for cardiology staff and fellow physicians.
Reports on studies performed regarding critical results and information found during sonographic procedures; communicates the ultrasound examining process to the patient so that maximum patient cooperation can be obtained.
Sets up, adjusts, and maintains the ultrasound equipment so that examinations are of the highest possible quality.
Perform detailed ultrasound examinations, modifying type of examination based on pathology discovered during procedure; utilize different techniques on own initiative to provide the most detailed information in assessing the patient's diagnosis.
Assists cardiologists in performing invasive diagnostic procedures, such as intravenous contrast injection, trans-esophageal echocardiography, and imaging during cardiocentesis.
Coordinates and demonstrates advanced sonography training protocols for physicians, medical students, nurses, Cardiology fellows, Sonographers and Cardiovascular students in a dynamic and demanding patient care environment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position may require the incumbent to work weekends.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must possess a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from (CCI); and/or Advanced Cardiac Sonographer from CCI

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Experience in operating, supervising the operation of, or instructing in the operation of equipment related to Echocardiograph. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
