The primary purpose of this position, RECREATION ASSISTANT, GS-0189-04 potential GS-0189-05, is to plan, collect, evaluate and analyze data found during organizational audits. The purpose of this position is lo conduct studies and perform analysis concerning programs in support of the Supply Management Activity Group.
Duties
- Administer fitness, sports programs, and special events.
- Provide quality service to patrons in arranging for and issuing needed sports and fitness equipment and supplies.
- Prepare facilities for special events, programs, and sports events. Initiates preparatory action needed to execute special events such as fun runs; special programs such as marathons; and sporting events such as volleyball, softball, flag football, soccer, and basketball.
- Oversee general housekeeping during shift of duty within facility and immediate outside area.
- Participate in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability and certification to perform basic first aid, CPR and AED.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0189 Recreation Aid and Assistant Series.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have 6 months of general experience. This experience is described as (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have 6 months of specialized experience which is equivalent to Federal experience at the next lower grade (GS-03) level or equivalent (grade level, pay schedule, pay band, etc.) and is described in detail in my resume. Specialized experience is experience gained while performing work that included (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aide in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aide or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aide or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; (5) summer aide in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children) (6) sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; (7) aide or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; or (8) aide or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of two full years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). OR A COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet the total special experience requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of sports and fitness special programs, events, and intramural and varsity sports.
2. Knowledge of customer service practices and principles to include inter-action with patrons, telephone courtesy, reservations, and associated practices and principles as obtained through previous experience or in-house training sessions.
3. Ability to administer basic concepts of special programs, events, and sports.
4. Knowledge of proper use and operation of electronic and mechanical fitness equipment and supplies associated with fitness and sports.
5. Ability to demonstrate use of cardiovascular equipment, free weights, and nautilus equipment to patrons.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Additional Information:
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, or similar activities; loading and unloading weight equipment; operating cleaning equipment and small vehicles. NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Depending, upon facility assignment and mission, work environment includes inside and outside work, and involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety and sanitation precautions typical of a fitness and sports environment. Inside work is normally in adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated environment; outside work is consistent with climatic conditions.
