About the Position: The position serves in the USACE Los Angeles District Operations Division. Ops and Maintenance operates and maintains 16 flood control dams and structures within the District's tri-state area.

Duties
Maintains and repair USACE facilities such as restrooms, buildings, lands and roads as necessary.
Performs landscaping and grounds maintenance at USACE owned facilities and structures to maintain a clean and orderly appearance.
Routinely communicates with others in the unit, leaders, supervisors and others as necessary to complete assigned work.
Conducts preventative and routine maintenance as well as repairs on various types of equipment.
Operates valves and /or gates at Flood control dams to regulate the flow of water being released.
Operates a variety of mobile and stationary vehicles and engineering construction equipment over different conditions and terrain.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examinations.
- This position has a drug testing requirement.
- This position requires a valid state drivers license.
- This position requires a forklift license within 180 days of employment.
- This position may require a valid CPR certificate and first responder (or equivalent) certificate and/or a valid hazardous material (HAZMAT) training certificate.
- This position may require working in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and working in confined space.
- This position may require wearing Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) escape packs, atmospheric monitoring devices and fall protection equipment; and/or wearing a prescribed uniform.
- This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Worker (Term Appointment) without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common maintenance tasks including carpentry, painting, plumbing, fencing and welding work to maintain various equipment and facilities and perform landscaping and grounds maintenance. Ability to use a variety of procedures and techniques to repair and maintain equipment. Ability to handle and apply herbicide and other hazardous materials. Ability to operate stationary and mobile construction and maintenance equipment. Ability to work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT - Work requires heavy physical effort and the ability to perform heavy lifting and carrying (50 pounds and over); use of both arms, both hands, and both legs; repeated bending, climbing, and reaching; continuous standing and walking; kneeling and crawling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work also requires operation of equipment and motor vehicles, rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Occasionally works in cramped quarters, or from ladders scaffolds or platforms.
WORKING CONDITIONS - Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Works in mud and water when required. Is subject to such hazards as working around moving machinery, working over and in water, working in cramped quarters, working on ladders, scaffolding, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, both above and below ground. Works with electrical, automotive and engineering equipment. May be exposed to excessive noise, dust, silica, asbestos, fumes, smoke, gases, solvents, grease, oil, and electrical equipment. Safety hats, safety shoes, gloves, and rain gear are furnished to employee for normal activities. Respirators, face shields, eye goggles, and other equipment are provided for herbicide application, painting, welding, and other hazardous duties. May be exposed to poisonous reptiles, insects, or plants. Routinely is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.
