The primary purpose of this position is to troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, install, and maintain a variety of complex multi-axis, multi-function fixed and semi fixed production machinery and equipment such as numerically controlled machine tools and other similar complex and sophisticated equipment.

Duties

1. Troubleshoots malfunctions, tests, repairs, overhauls, installs and maintains complex three and four axis numerically controlled machinery capable of performing a broad range of programmed machining functions such as multi-plane boring, drilling, milling, tapping, facing, planning, and other related operations. 2. Troubleshoots malfunctions, repairs, aligns and performs complete overhaul of automated and conventional machine tools, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic test equipment and associated attachments. 3. Performs preventative maintenance on complex multi-axis numerically controlled machine tools, production, and industrial machinery and equipment. 4. Operates, maintains and controls tools and equipment. 5. Utilizes safety and practices and procedures following established rules and regulations and maintains a safe, clean, and secure work environment.

  • May be required to perform other work operations incidental to the mechanical work such as minor electrical or electronic checks, i.e. switches, solenoids, etc.
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate driver's license may be required for the position. May drive truck up to 1/4 ton, tug, fork lift (up to 15,000 lbs. capacity) or light cargo carrier.
  • Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees.
  • As required, takes formal training on numerical controlled machines from manufacturer and receives special instructions and training from factory representatives at time of installation of each new machine.
  • May be required to use respirator and attend respirator training classes when scheduled by training monitor.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5300 Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the Ability to do the work without normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials Trouble shooting PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Employee is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, climb and work in cramped, awkward positions over and under machinery, of all types for sustained periods of time. May be required to climb and work from ladders; platforms and scaffolds and cal walks. Frequently handles, lifts, and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds and occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with assistance from others or with weight lifting equipment. Ability to distinguish basic colors, good near vision, and dexterous use of hands is required. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside in areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Floor and deck surfaces are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Employees are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts, bruises, and injuries such as electric shock or arc flash, as well as bums caused by electrical energy or soldering irons, and to noise and vibration from machines. Work conditions may include exposure to toxic chemicals, fumes, oils, grease, solvents, and plating solutions. Some work is performed from ladders and stagings exposing the mechanic to the possibility of serious injury from slipping and falling. May be required to wear safety equipment/devices and protective equipment as prescribed by appropriate safety regulations.
