Computer Engineer position is assigned to the Biomedical Section of Facilities Management Service at the Boise VA Medical Center (BVAMC), Boise ID. The Computer Engineer provides technical support for all matters of concern overseeing the operating implementation and upkeep of networked electronics systems of Boise VA Medical center and all associated Clinical Outpatient Centers (CBOCs).

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Overseeing the operating implementation and upkeep of multiple networked electronic systems. Providing technical support and management of systems, security controls including but not limited to security cameras, panic alarms, card readers, the pneumatic tube system, guest Wi-Fi, direct digital control (DDC) server maintenance, A/V systems for education and conference rooms, que management for laboratory and pharmacy, pharmacy pill counters/packagers, power mobile shelving, inventory dispensing systems, and nurse call. Providing additional management to all features of Real Time Locating System (RTLS) including asset tracking, inventory management, patient elopement systems and cardiac cath lab inventory management. Providing preventive maintenance inspections, maintenance and repair, calibration, installation, modification, and user training. Diagnosing and/or resolving problems in response to customer reported incidents via trouble tickets. Preforms all software updates and patching for networked electronic system. Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and procedures with electronic instrumentation system and initiates appropriate preventive or corrective action. Ability to determine whether a system is to be used, removed from, to be restored to, or allowed to remain in clinical use. Serves as a Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for design and implements projects associated with electronic system. Reviews all contractor's technical submittals, shop drawings, design computations, or similar information on materials for conformance with plans and specifications for these systems. Represents the organization at vendor events, meetings and conferences as required keeping the facility updated as possible with compliance. Recommend, develop, implement, redesign, reconfigure, or modify operating procedures to reduce equipment failures, eliminate hazards, or enhance accuracy and reliability. Planning and performing scheduled and unscheduled (emergency) maintenance on equipment to ensure the equipment is operating properly, calibrated properly, and in compliance with code and standards. Provides development, review, analysis, and evaluation of designs, drawings, and specification preliminary to facilities. Develops narrative scope of work detailing specifics control engineering requirements, including cost estimates for facilities related projects. Provide expert technical information/advice as a key member or coordinator on purchase of new instrumentation, planning of new systems, and modifications of existing systems to meet special needs. Being alert to all situations, acting tactfully and diplomatically in performing functions to not cause any disturbance to essential medical center operations. Performs other duties as assigned. Basic Education Requirement: A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: 1. Professional registration or licensure: Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT)1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions. 2. Written Test: Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)2 examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. 3. Specified academic courses: Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A. 4. Related curriculum: Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions. Specialized experience include: Overseeing the operating implementation and upkeep of multiple networked electronic systems; Providing technical support and management of systems, security controls including but not limited to security cameras, panic alarms, card readers, the pneumatic tube system, guest Wi-Fi, direct digital control (DDC) server maintenance, audio-visual systems for education and conference rooms, que management for laboratory and pharmacy, pharmacy pill counters/packagers, power mobile shelving, inventory dispensing systems, nurse call, patent que, and other similar systems in a hospital environment. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You may substitute education for specialized experience if you have successful completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Computer Engineer at the GS-11 grade level? Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the computer Engineer. There may be limited crawling under desk and behind areas to gain access to equipment.
