The student intern is located at the Navajo National Monument and also services the Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site in the Southern Four Corners Group of parks.
This is an indefinite, Excepted Service appointment that may continue if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.
Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment.
Duties
Presents preplanned curricula-based education programs, both on and off-site, in support of park mission.
Plans cultural/natural resource education programs and activities leading to the understanding and appreciation of the resources in the Southern Four Corners Group of parks.
Serves as a point of contact with teachers and community group contacts for curriculum-based education programs.
Assists the Interpretative Division to include staffing the Visitor Centers/Information Desk, assisting in exhibit updates, and supporting special events.
Area Information: Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed. Navajo National Monument was established to protect three cliff dwelling sites (Betatakin, Keet Seel, and Inscription House) that date back to 1300 AD. The Monument headquarters is located on a remote sandstone plateau in northeastern Arizona on the rural Navajo Indian Reservation at an elevation of about 7500 feet. The upland area is semi-arid, with pinon and juniper forest and associated semi-desert plants and animals with isolated pockets of alpine timber in nearby canyons. Deep canyons originate near each separate unit of the Monument, where well-preserved ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings are found. Daytime temperatures range from 85 degrees to 95 degrees during the summer and from 25 degrees to 35 degrees during the winter. The monument experiences an average annual precipitation of 11.8 inches (301 mm). Limited shopping, emergency services, and Indian Health Service clinic are available in Kayenta, Arizona about 35 miles away. Major shopping, medical hospital, and dental facilities are available in Page (65 miles) and Flagstaff (130 miles), AZ.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/22/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples include presenting curriculum-based program talks to diverse audiences which demonstrate the professional standards for formal education of primary, secondary, and high school grades. Such experience can be gained in positions such as an environmental educator, teacher, teaching assistant, or other similar work, assisting in the preparation and presentation of education programs to school groups and youths. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate academic study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 90 semester hours of college (30 semester hours beyond the second year)(50% of the experience requirement). The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
