Duties

The Intermediate Care Technician is responsible for performing ongoing patient care duties in the Emergency Department and assisting with or performing other related technical health care procedures under the supervision of the Emergency Department Physicians as competency is demonstrated and documented. The major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Providing assessment and management of ambulatory patients seen in the Emergency Department
Evaluating patients for emergency medical conditions, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and performing a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician
Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations to include crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, and one-to-one observations
Assisting Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures
Performing airway management using BIPAP and advanced airway techniques including the use of LMA and oral intubations using laryngoscope if properly trained, credentialed and privileged may be included as responsibilities
Operating specialized medical equipment such as defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus
Performing additional duties include dressing changes, wound management, suture removal, repair of simple lacerations, Foley catheters insertion, splint, binder and bandage applications, and performance of tracheotomy care
Performing specimen collection, preparation and transfer to the lab for processing of blood, tissue, urine, stool and sputum is expected to be a routine part of his/her practice
Responding to medical emergencies on the facility grounds, and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT) as assigned
Conducting or assisting with the training of personnel in CPR, basic, and advanced emergency medical care techniques if appropriately trained and qualified
Conducting or assisting with stand-downs, community health programs, blood pressure and glucose screenings, flu immunizations, etc.
Transporting monitored and unmonitored patients to diagnostic procedures and/or inpatient units
Performing triage duties as assigned. In this situation the incumbents need to have expertise in the use of the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage tool or be trained in its use prior to conducting
Perform other duties assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT - This position is being advertised as a temporary appointment not to exceed the date of 11/25/2025.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; Shifts vary, will be discussed during interview.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors are as follows (NOTE: Certifications/documentation of the following must be submitted at the time of application to receive credit for further consideration):
Must possess a valid/current state issued Paramedic license/certification or National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) for eligibility for employment as a Paramedic.
Must possess a valid and unrestricted state driver's license. (Please DO NOT provide driver's license. We may not accept pictures. This requirement will be verified during interview).
In addition to the English Language Proficiency and Selective Placement Factor above, to qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal Service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of an Intermediate Care Technician. Specialized experience includes support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled (i.e., experience performing patient examination and providing prompt and efficient patient care in an emergency department or similar environment). Qualifying examples of specialized experience include but not limited to: Evaluating patients for emergency medical conditions; performing a wide range of treatment procedures; performing airway management using advanced airway techniques; operating specialized medical equipment- i.e. defibrillators, electrocardiographs, and oxygen apparatus; perform wound management; and documents all actions, assessments, diagnostics, and procedures in the medical record. Education: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Combination: Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate education (beyond the first year) and experience, described above, to meet total qualification requirements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients.
