This position is in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SG VHS) located primarily in Gainesville, Florida. The Health Physicist position is within the Director's office. This position functions as the Associate Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO), reporting directly to the NFSG VHS Network Assistant Director and working closely with the Health Physicist-Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).
Duties
This position is primarily responsible for serving as a subject matter expert for the Radiation Safety Program to ensure that the required continuity plan is covered in the absence of the RSO, and that safety is maintained, that policy is implemented, and that compliance with regulations is occurring.

The Health Physics Series, 1306 has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) must meet one (1) of basic requirements listed below:
A. Degree: A four year degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. (TRANCRIPTS REQUIRED)
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above (minimum of a Bachelors Degree), plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
In addition to meeting the above required Individual Occupational Requirement applicants must meet the Specialized Experience at the specified grade level.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Compliance with Federal, State, and local government regulations pertaining to radiation safety; Providing training in safety matters to all personnel having routine or occasional exposure or engaged in the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment; Review, recommend, develop, approve or disapprove changes and modifications to experimental procedures involving large amounts of radioactive materials; Applies concepts, principles, theories, and methods pertaining to the protection of people, their environment, and equipment from hazards (for example, radiation or hazardous chemical) and the control of radioactive material; Operating appropriate detectors and calibrations of instruments for measuring and assaying radioactive materials.

Education
