This position is located in the Police Executive Office Service at VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) - Seattle VA Medical Center in Seattle, WA. The Telephone Operator is responsible for providing centralized continuous point of contact for Veterans and clinical providers in all areas of patient care at VAPSHCS.
Duties

The Telephone Operator represents VA to Veterans as a first point of contact for customer service and is a key member for ensuring continuity of care in a customer friendly way by extending courtesy and professionalism to all callers. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Operating the voice and digital paging system, long distance pagers, and hospital wide overhead voice paging system
Communicating on a daily basis with the VA Police, Facilities Management using the high frequency radio to notify them of all emergency situations
Functioning as the emergency 911 Operator for the medical center and determines the need and urgency of each call
Comprehending and compiling a complex set of more than 25 different daily and monthly clinical
staff and Resident rotation and on-call schedules for all clinical areas in the Medical Center
Working on a daily basis with the Medical Center computer network by accessing VISTA, VAcinty, Outlook, Word, Excel and related computer applications
Providing excellent customer service via the telephone and face to face simultaneously
Maintaining a current knowledge of and ability to answer inquiries from other employees on procedures, policies, directives and information
Maintaining an accurate daily Record Log of events and incidents
Insuring functional operation of the telecommunications equipment to include each multiline console, emergency 911 phone, by-pass phone, digital pagers, voice pagers, and incoming and outgoing phone lines
Performing clerical duties such as typing documents, record keeping, quick reference guides, on-call schedule, timekeeping, and ordering supplies
Performing other duties as necessary to ensure the full functionality of the Medical Center switchboard as assigned by the Supervisor
Performing other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 04:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. or 12:00 a.m. to 08:00 a.m.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Telephone Operator in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Specialized Experience (GS-04): You must have one (1) year of general experience. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled (i.e., Telephone Operator). Qualifying examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: add specialized experience description. (CLEAR DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must show complete information for each job entry, such as beginning and ending dates of employment, duties performed, and/or total hours worked per week.) OR,
Education (GS-04): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two (2) years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary with reaching, dialing numbers on the console, keyboarding, carrying of light supplies required. Because calls received are emergent and so varied, the position can be emotionally taxing.
