Located at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA, this Interior Designer reports to the Assistant Chief Engineer. The Interior Design is responsible for the planning, implementation, and operational management of the medical center interior design program.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Creates and implements the interior design program to include Interior Design Planning and Standardization, Interior Design Programming, Project Development and Management of Interior Design projects, Signage and Wayfinding, Interior Design Budgeting, and Interior Design Customer Support Prepares visual aids, such as architectural drawings, renderings, color boards, and physical models for presentation of projects to officials and clients Develops building standards for the facility to include interior finishes, window coverings, wall protection, cabinetry, privacy curtains and furniture finishes Prepares floor plans, furnishings and accessory selections Prepares and maintains interior design budget Develops project schedule on interior design projects to ensure the date of build-out will meet client/project team expectations Prepares preliminary space plans for proposed projects, including detailed specifications, to evaluate alternatives Utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Drafting Software to maintain accurate records of project in all stages, from planning and design through completion Provides supervision and guidance to employees and contract personnel practicing Interior Design functions Ensures space plans and design concepts are safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate and meet all public health, safety, and welfare requirements, including code, accessibility, environmental, and infection control guidelines Analyzes and adheres to code and regulatory requirements Presents oral, written or graphic proposals Monitors construction to ensure all parties adhere to the design intent plans Researches and writes technical criteria specific to each furniture requirement, including the statement of work, market research, independent government estimate, and other supporting documents utilized by contracting in the solicitation process Performs other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of an Interior Designer, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience that required the performance of work concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs such as: (1) Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment; (2) Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings; (3) Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public; (4) Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; (5) Managing projects, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc. At this level applicants should be performing the duties of the position independently, with little oversight and guidance, and possess sufficient knowledge and expertise of interior designing to provide consultation/advisory services to project managers and leaders. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ Education: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design. This education must have been obtained at an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Interior Designer position. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ Combination: Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate level education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which may be used to meet total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the Interior Designer position.
