This position is located within the Location Support Office for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Raleigh, NC.
In this position, you will serve as the technical assistant and building coordinator with overall responsibilities for the modification and maintenance of the laboratory/greenhouse facilities.
Duties
Provide general electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and structural maintenance service.
Perform maintenance and repairs on complex gas fired heating systems.
Locate and diagnose trouble and perform minor repairs to electrical and plumbing systems.
Provides modification and maintenance of the Plant Science Facility, for developing, constructing, modifying, maintaining, operating mechanical/electrical systems and equipment used to provide utilities and accomplish research projects.
Erect, alter, remove and paint partitions of wood, glass, metal, sheet rock, acoustical tile or related materials.
Perform service calls and preventive maintenance inspections to check boilers, HVAC systems, controls, and other building systems.
Install or remove various pipes, basins, drain lines and other vessels associated with the facility heating, air conditioning systems including the installation of insulation.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Physical Effort
Work requires active physical effort including extensive walking, bending, stooping, climbing, working from ladders/scaffolding, and pushing or pulling heavy materials in limited access areas. May also require heavy lifting at times.
Working Conditions
Work is normally performed inside where light, heat and ventilation are usually adequate. Work may be required to work outside the building in cold, damp, or hot weather on occasion, or to work within the building in area where building ventilation, heating or cooling equipment has been shut down for maintenance or other purposes.
