Duties

As a Supervisory Biologist/Microbiologist (Interdisciplinary) you will: Develop and implement policies, processes, procedures, quality assessments, enhancements, and resources needed to achieve consistent, high quality testing services. Ensure the regulatory and control work for testing of items such as antibiotics, sera, and antitoxins is in conformance with legal standards for purity, potency, and safety. Develop, review, and implement strategic plans for laboratory programs and testing services. Manage studies or issues pertaining to testing systems in the laboratories. Review and approve all diagnostic tests for use with clinical samples in CDC Atlanta campus infectious disease laboratories. Develop educational and procedural intervention strategies for improving the quality of laboratory testing.

Requirements

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: For the Microbiology Series 0403: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. For the General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series 0401: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting one of the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the addiitonal qualification requirement listed below: To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: implementing and providing guidance/oversight for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations in infectious disease laboratories diagnostic testing; and ensuring validation of disease related test methods. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
