Duties

The National Wildlife Health Center in the Midcontinent Region of the USGS provides technical assistance and leadership for addressing health issues involving resources under the Department of the Interior stewardship, fosters partnerships with federal, state, and other agencies to address wildlife health as a component of ecosystem health. The Center investigates highly infectious diseases and other diseases affecting a broad spectrum of wildlife by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who provide an integrated program of disease diagnosis, field response, technical assistance, research, training, and support services. The Center's research focuses on understanding the ecology of disease to identify the most vulnerable linkages among affected host species, the disease agent, and environmental factors resulting in disease. Our programs aim to use this information to mitigate factors leading to population decline and result the integration of information to develop effective disease prevention and control strategies to assist resource managers improve management of wildlife populations. As a Maintenace Worker within the National Wildlife Health Center, some of your specific duties will include:

Qualifications

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job-related task statements in this announcement. To be basically qualified for this position applicants must meet the identified screen-out element below. Screen-Out Element: The Maintenance Worker provides entry-level job duties in functions needed for repair of various equipment that is mechanical, electrical, or plumbing in nature. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. Land Management Workforce Flexibility Eligibles

--Certain National Guard Technicians - Submit proof that confirms that you were involuntarily separated (other than by removal for cause on charges of misconduct or delinquency); you served at least 3 years as a technician; and are within 1 year of your separation date from service as a Guard Technician.

--Public Land Corps (PLC) - Submit the signed Certificate of Eligibility for Noncompetitive Hiring Status (PLC) issued by the PLC Coordinator for the organization where the creditable service was completed.
