This position is an expert in the analysis of respirable dust via gravimetric analysis and performs complex and challenging duties related to preparing and weighing respirable dust samples, calibrating and repairing noise dosimeters, calibrating and repairing noise dosimeter calibrators, processing the resulting data, and conducting quality control programs for these and other related processes. This position is inside the bargaining unit.

Duties

Preforms complex and challenging duties related to preparing and weighing respirable dust samples, processing the resulting data, and conducting quality control programs for these and other related processes. Calibrates laboratory microbalances used to weigh respirable dust samples manually and automatically. Performs a detailed laboratory calibration of acoustical field calibrators and noise dosimeters. Assist the center laboratory quality assurance manager with developing, modifying, and implementing testing or reporting forms. Serves as a mentor to lower grade employees in specific tasks and job techniques. Assists or conducts courses for MSHA Enforcement personnel on the use, calibration, and torubleshooting techniques. Monitors, initiates, and implements changes to complex in-house data reduction programs and data input programs in conjunction with input and guidance from experienced professional employees. Facilitates accurate and timely data entry into internal databases. Develops, updates, implements, and maintains the records management program with respect to laboratory data. Performs necessary computations for statistical evaluation of the gravimetric accuracy and precision via the internal quality control programs. Calibrates and repairs noise dosimeters and noise dosimeter calibrator instruments. Conducts evaluations and testing of prototype or novel noise measurement instrumentation for use in mining environments. Informal written reports and summaries of the developed testing procedures, results, and recommendations are provided to professional staff and management.

Qualifications

The Physical Science Technician Series, GS-1311, has basic occupational requirements for positions covered by this standard. Applicants must meet the following basic requirement to qualify: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to a least the next lower grade level, GS-06 in the Federal Service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-012, in the Federal Service that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, experience and skills to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience must include five of the following: (These types of examples must be fully evident in your resume.) 1) Tests and calibrates mine hazard detection instruments; 2) Reads schematics and comprehends relevant technical literature; 3) Operates, maintains, and calibrates analytical and robotic equipment; 4) Operates, maintains, and adjusts humidification equipment; 5) Analyzes and evaluates lab data/information; and/or 6) Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills utilizing Microsoft Office Applicants (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe to draft, finalize and present reports and presentations.
