This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Performs the full range of over-haul, repair work, and preventive maintenance repairs on heavy duty mobile equipment.

Duties

Perform the full range of over-haul and repair work on heavy duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel or multi-fuel). Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment using schematics (electrical, fuel, hydraulic, and air), and computerized diagnostic equipment. Repair equipment by removing engines, power packs, transmissions, differentials, suspension and brake systems along with other heavy-duty operations to diagnose, replace, reassemble, and adjust heavy duty equipment and vehicles. Test, diagnose, and repair all types of failures in electrical systems (12 and 24 volts), including ignition, lighting and power circuits, using various devices and testing equipment.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to random drug testing IAW Drug-Free Federal Workplace requirements set forth in DODI 1010.09.
  • The duties of the position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Repair heavy duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel or multi-fuel); use basic tools (e.g., wrenches, sockets, ratchets, impact wrenches, torque wrenches, electric drills, soldering iron, brake tools, and screwdrivers); and test and troubleshoot components and systems to locate equipment defects. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. At times, works on top of or under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling and depressing of various hand and foot controls. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and occasionally outside and subject to extreme weather conditions, in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work is dirty, greasy and noisy; possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools, slipping from work position. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes. Prescribed safety practices and safety equipment is used; protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
