Duties
Performs the full range of survey technical duties that require significant responsibility for precision work, survey execution and record preparation.
Responsible for the recovery, evaluation, and documentation of existing survey monuments and reference objects.
Read maps and use GPS to record and determine locations.
Operation and maintenance of surveying equipment and instruments (EDMs, robotic total stations, tribrachs, rover poles and Global Positioning Systems).
Operate, take very exacting measurements. Responsible for the reduction of data from raw field form to latitudes and departures of coordinates for mathematical analysis.
Computes survey locations, closures, inverses and proportional segments for restoring lost property corners
Assists with the preparation of field notes and plats, recovery records, property descriptions by aliquot and metes and bounds methods, and project reports.
Responsible for the daily guidance of a field crew’s operations.
Assures all safety requirements are fulfilled and properly observed, and all necessary safety equipment is available and utilized.
Prepares or provides information for preparing all necessary administrative documents such as time and attendance, travel vouchers, vehicle maintenance and operational reports, accident reports, emergency field purchases, and weekly progress reports.
May act as contract inspector in field survey contracts on dependent or original surveys.
Requirements

To qualify for the GS-8:
A. Have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Operated and maintained a variety of manual and electronic devices such as transits, theodolites, levels, distance measuring and positioning equipment, or other instruments used on land surveys; Utilized a variety of surveying related equipment and GPS equipment to perform surveys and prepare associated documents and reports; Independently measured uncomplicated surveys and resolved technical problems; Assisted in performing basic surveys, such as location, right-of-way, and property surveys for a segment or portion of a project; Determined angles, distances, and differences in elevation between stations; OR
B. Have completed one and a half years of graduate level education in coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology) in a directly related course in subjects such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics; OR
C. Have an equivalent combination of experience and education as described above.
To qualify for the GS-9:
A. Have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 level in the Federal Service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: routine use survey equipment and related electronic measuring equipment such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Global Positioning System (GPS), total stations, and Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) units; evaluating survey evidence in the field to restore previous surveys; experience guiding or leading crews to complete technical survey related duties; routinely gathering, recording, and processing survey data; OR
B. Have completed two full years of graduate level education or have a master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics; OR
C. Have an equivalent combination of experience and education as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: Work requires continuous physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: Office work performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety standards.
