The primary purpose of this position is to provide full performance level work in constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Performs routine maintenance and repair of locking devices.
Duties
- Independently applies skilled methods, techniques, and advanced shop mathematics to construct, install, repair, and modify a wide variety of structures.
- Performs routine maintenance, overhaul, and repair of standard types of mechanical locking devices such as
mortise, rim, key-in-the-knob, deadbolt, office equipment, padlocks, and emergency exit locks.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment.
- Uses and maintains tools.
- Maintains records and documents actions.

- Emergency overtime may be required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4600 Wood Work Group Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of carpentry methods and techniques and precision carpentry equipment.
2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
3. Basic knowledge of standard mechanical locking devices.
4. Knowledge of advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out more complex and exact projects~ and of regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.
5. Skill in using, setting-up, operating, and maintaining a variety of woodworking power and hand tools/equipment; constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood structures; and in interpreting complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes.
6. Ability to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.
Physical Effort:
Uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require standing and holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The work requires considerable bending. kneeling. and stooping. On-site work typically requires crawling. climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and roof tops. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood and other construction materials. May lift and move materials up to 40 pounds. unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
Working Conditions:
Works in shops and at job sites. In shops, is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. At job sites, may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders and subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. Uses protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
