The incumbent is responsible for plant operations of the entire Island, interpreting state, regional, and national policy, and a number of regulatory compliance issues concerning environment and health. Must have sufficient knowledge to provide assistance to the Facility Manager. Such interpretation would include technical regulations, designing and constructing mitigation measures and negotiating resolutions of compliance problems with state and local agencies pertaining to utility systems.

Duties

The incumbent will work independently to troubleshoot, repair, modify, overhaul, test, calibrate and install a variety of multi-component industrial and precision instruments and equipment. The equipment and systems normally serviced are interdependent electrical, mechanical and hydraulic devices which control and regulate flows, pressures and levels; such as magnetic and differential pressure flowmeter, sonic meters, turbidimeter and other equipment that measure and record operating parameters. The incumbent also installs, repairs and calibrates analyzers for turbidity, chlorine and pH as well as the trend recorders associated with these analyzers. They will troubleshoot and functionally test equipment to isolate defective components and perform repairs, adjusting and replacing parts as required. The incumbent will work using operating principles, blueprints, diagrams, technical manuals, test equipment and trade tools. The position works with various machinery including reciprocating pumps, centrifugal pumps, sewage grinders and electric motors. They repair machinery by replacing bent shafts, bearing, etc. The incumbent performs electrical testing of motors and other components checking continuity, ohms resistance, voltage and amperage using multimeters, meggers and continuity testers. The incumbent maintains and troubleshoots systems ranging from large primary voltages to small millivolt/milliamp digital circuit boards, and touch screen equipment. Is knowledgeable of all wire gauges and sizes, and their controls. Must be capable of applying all facets of electrical and instrumentation ability associated with the fields of water and wastewater maintenance. Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote, and isolated island in the northwestern corner of Lake Superior with numerous lakes and native wildlife. The park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking, and more. Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI. Isle Royale is 99% federally designated wilderness with no roads, few telephones, no cellular coverage, limited amenities, and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland. The primary mode of travel throughout the island is by boat or hiking. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours. Government provided Wi-Fi is also available at most duty stations. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on incumbent's specific duty station on the island. To protect Isle Royale's fauna from disease and other maladies, pets are prohibited.
