The United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Southern District of Florida (SDFL) is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Appellate Assistant United States Attorney in one of the largest USAOs in the nation. The Appellate Division represents the USAO in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The Division provides advice and handles all appeals to the Eleventh Circuit from both the civil and criminal cases prosecuted by the Office.

Duties

Appellate litigation typically includes the preparation of briefs and the presentation of oral arguments before the Court of Appeals. In addition to defending the criminal convictions and civil judgments obtained by the Office, the Appellate Division also brings affirmative appeals to the Eleventh Circuit from rulings adverse to the United States, after consultation with the Solicitor General's Office and Criminal or Civil Division of the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Members of the Appellate Division also give advice and consult on legal matters with the United States Attorney and other attorneys in the Office. At least two appellate attorneys are assigned as liaisons to each branch office and each trial section in the Miami Office.

Requirements

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. Proof of active bar membership is required. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Applicants should have demonstrated an interest in appellate work, excellent writing and analytical skills, and an exceptional academic background. Federal judicial clerkship experience is highly desirable. Applicants should also possess strong interpersonal skills, and the capacity to function in a highly demanding environment with minimal guidance. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
