Duties
Major Duties include:
Collects, develops, and produces publication ready documentation on cultural resources. Identifies, evaluates, and monitors cultural resources, identifies potential threats.
Provides information, data and contributions for the preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials for all park undertakings. as required by Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
Assists park staff and partners with the development of cultural resource protection strategies to minimize impacts to cultural resources. Collaborates with all park programs, divisions, and contractors to minimize impacts to cultural resources.
Incorporates appropriate GIS technology into job to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries from technical supervisor, managers, and others. Uses automatic methods of data collection, analysis or illustration. Inputs data into digital form and uses computer.
Conducts archeological research (designs and implements survey) to meet resource needs of the park.
TERM Position: This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years at Whiskeytown and a possible extension of a total of 20 months at Isle Royale, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
Park Area Descriptions:
Isle Royale National Park: This position is duty stationed on the mainland at the park headquarters in Houghton, Michigan, for November - April and on the island for the summer season, May - October. The island portion of the park is located approximately 70 miles from the headquarters and is accessed via ship or seaplane.
Houghton is a town of approximately 7,800 residents and houses Michigan Technological University. The University has an average enrollment of 7,000. The bordering town of Hancock has a residential population of 4,300. Park housing is not available on the mainland for this position. Park housing is provided for this position on the island. Isle Royale is federally designated wilderness with no roads, no reliable cell phone coverage, limited internet access, and few opportunities to return to the mainland. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly. To protect Isle Royale's fauna from disease and other maladies, pets are prohibited.

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area: Whiskeytown, at ~40,000 acres, is at the heart of the 1849 Gold Rush. Remnants of historic mines, orchards, ditches, and homesteads litter the landscape, often overlaying the prehistoric occupation dating back nearly 5500 years. In addition, this park was built during the Mission 66 park development program and is part of the Central Valley Project in California. The depth and breadth of the cultural resources here are varied and complex with much of it accessible to the public as a recreation area. Whiskeytown continues to recover from the catastrophic 2018 Carr Fire which burned approximately 97% of the park and destroyed nearly 50 structures and burned 100% of all known archaeological sites within the park. Projects planned include site condition assessments, ongoing documentation and rehabilitation of our trails system, historic district recovery and preservation maintenance, prescribed fire project prep/monitoring, and outstanding project completion.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/19/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for these Archeologist positions, you MUST meet the specialized experience AND the basic education requirement.
You must possess at least one of the following Basic Education requirements for the 0193 Archeology series by close of the announcement. You must include all transcripts at the time of application.
EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND,Six semester hours of related course work in:geography, geology, or cultural geography;history, historiography, or historical archeology;environmental studies;scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/orsurveying;ANDArcheological field school.

Bachelor's or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements above (must include archeological field school).

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Possess a combination of college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

EXPERIENCE: Possess four years of archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). (One grade interval work such as technician or assistant work in a single grade occupational series at the GS-07 level does NOT qualify for this position, however GS-08 level may). Specialized experience includes the following: applying the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of archeology to conduct prehistoric and historic archeological field investigations and cultural resource projects which included the preparation of survey reports, site recording forms, site maps, overlays, field notes, and using Global Positioning System (GPS); assisting with Tribal consultation; and assisting with determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to this position. The total education offered to meet this provision must have provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the work of this position.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only graduate education beyond the first year is creditable when combining.
