The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is within the Facilities Management Service at the VA Bedford Healthcare System, located in Bedford, Massachusetts. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance, repair and operation of all refrigeration, air conditioning and air handling equipment within the medical center. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Maintains current inventory of parts, hardware, refrigerant, and other products and notifies supervisor when re-ordering is needed;
Fabricates duct work from sheet metal for modifications, installation or repair of air conditioning duct systems;
Utilizes schematics, blueprints, sketches, technical manuals, oral and written instructions while conforming to safe and efficient working practices;
Completes work assignments that are made through written and oral instructions, work orders and preventive maintenance print-out schedules;
Assembles and installs a variety of equipment (such as evaporators, condensers, receivers, expansion valves, dryers, etc.) per manufacturer's specifications;
Applies principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration (such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, the use of refrigerant table, etc.);
Uses vacuum pumps, halide torches or electronic leak detectors to troubleshoot and repair equipment; and
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, this position requires a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Certification. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are ineligible for further consideration.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Efforts: The incumbent may be required to bend, reach and hold awkward positions for prolonged periods. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking and stooping is also required fo this position. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50lbs. and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50lbs. either alone or with others.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. They are required to work in close, extremely hot or cold places and around high voltage electricity. Must work in noisy, dusty and humid places.
